Summer days

Dress – Keepsake the label from Revolve clothing; Rings – Forever21; Bracelets – Forever21; Shoes – Taccetti.

It’s currently hurricane/low season here in the BVI which means there are a lot fewer tourists and for that reason lots of local businesses are closed. So even though the weather doesn’t really change here very much throughout the year, there is still a definite quiet, end-of-summer vibe – a sort of nostalgic feeling that’s slightly sad but also pleasant. On Sunday me and J had nothing much more to do than take a sunset stroll along Long Bay, my favourite beach in BVI, before heading to dinner at one of the few restaurants still open.

P.s. There is a mauve version of this dress that I think would beautiful for the fall.

Anguilla

The start of this trip was pretty inauspicious – a direct, 25-minute flight to our destination at St. Martin and they managed to lose my luggage. Everybody we told about it just burst out laughing. I got it back later the next day but it meant that we spent a lot of the first day in or around the airport. Luckily St Martin happens to have one of the most famous airports in the world. The runway is so close to the beach (Maho) it feels as if the plane is about to land on top of you, and the force and noise of the jet stream when the planes take off is insane. I don’t know why I didn’t get any pictures – I must have been concerned about my luggage! Continue reading Anguilla

PARADE

Bikini – Agua Bendita: Topbottoms; Earrings – Accessorize; Bracelet – Souvenir from Navajo, Arizona.

I’m so happy that this bikini got delivered the day before I left for the Anguilla August carnival as the beading and colours fitted the atmosphere perfectly – a few more feathers and sequins and I could have tried to blend into the parade! Choosing which one to order was difficult as Agua Bendita suits are all so crazy colourful and beautiful – I ended up mixing and matching two different styles as I loved the beaded tassels on this one. I should have taken a close-up of the top as you can’t see it but that’s also beautifully beaded. It feels so well-made too. And OK it’s pretty hard to compete with Irina Shayk (current model for the brand) but the bikini designs are quite flattering – especially the back of the bottoms. I’ll be posting the full Anguilla travel post soon.

IKWETTA

Location – Cooper Island, BVI

If I get sent something that I’ve agreed to feature on the blog I’ll normally wait to take pictures before I wear it but I couldn’t resist with these sandals! I saw them in pictures and thought they were incredibly cute but I was even more impressed when I saw the beautiful beading and the colours up close. I’m kind of in love. They’re also for an awesome cause – you won’t find them in stores as Ikwetta is an online retailer selling hand-made African artisanal products. It started as a kickstarter campaign and aims to fairly reward the creative value of these awesome designers. Both of these sandals are from the Gladiator Maasai collection. I chose these as the gladiator sandals that are everywhere right now can be a little intense for the beach but these are perfect. I think I saw that there’s an option to get the Turkana tie-backs (last pic) with a bit of heel which looks amazing. I paired them with this cute romper from Calzedonia. I have to admit this outfit makes me very happy – I don’t think I realised before I came out to the Caribbean that I didn’t have to dress like I was in a commercial for a time-share or resort when I went to the beach. In fact I don’t think I own a single item in white linen. Success.

The photos are taken on Cooper Island in the BVI. The only way to get to Cooper is by boat and since J just recently co-bought a little sailboat we decided that this would be her maiden voyage! Continue reading IKWETTA

St John travel video

Morning all! I’m excited to share my first ever travel video of stunning St John on the blog today. You can tell it’s my first video because for the first half of the trip I forgot to take the plastic cover off for the audio! So it’s mainly pretty music this time around (And I’ve just noticed that the lyrics are incongruous/hilarious!). I’m keen to improve the general image quality so if any of you guys also do videos and have any tips please let me know. Hope you enjoy 🙂

It feels very strange to live on a Caribbean island and be able to wake up in the morning and say ‘let’s get the ferry to the US today’! But that’s exactly what we did when we went to the US Virgin Islands for a long weekend. Continue reading ST JOHN

Trèfle

firstfredbikf copyliedownbikgreenbiktffsitdfwblueredffDSC_0415 copy Swimsuits – All Trèfle designs; Sunglasses – Dolce & Gabbana

I’m so excited to post pictures from my first ever collaboration with local summerwear brand Trèfle today! These gorgeous swimsuits from the Botanical Garden collection are designed by equally gorgeous and talented BVI designer, Kristin Frazer. I’ll admit, I was initially quite slow to accept the mid-rise bikini trend, and this is the first time I’ve actually featured one on the blog, but I was surprised to find that the red, high-waist bikini (second pic) shown above was actually my favourite out of the whole collection. In fact the bikinis suit my favourite style of classic-meets-modern perfectly. The floral prints and high-waist bottoms and corset tops feel quite vintage, while the bright, block colours give the swimsuits a definite modern and Caribbean twist. The nice thing about the corset tops is that they tie up any way you like, and I love that you can mix and match the colours and prints as you prefer, and any pairing works. I can be pretty lazy, so this suits me fine 🙂

I didn’t get as many pictures as I’d have liked of the high-waists as we had trouble with the reflector screen we were using. I borrowed one a while ago to do the ‘And she wore‘ post and I really liked the results so I ordered one in and used it for this shoot. I like the light that it lends to the pictures – (and how shiny it makes my hair look!) but with only me and my boyfriend doing the pictures it was actually a nightmare to use! It was quite windy that day so the screen kept filling up and acting like a sail. It went wheeling demonically down to the opposite side of the beach at some point. I’m wondering if I should abandon it altogether for future shoots. Is the difference in light worth it do you think?? Do you guys ever have any photography nightmares when taking outfit pics?

BOMBA SHACK

Shorts – Ralph Lauren; Top – H&M; Bag – Dolce & Gabbana; Shoes – Carvela; Sunglasses – Dolce & Gabbbana; Earrings – Tiffany & Co; Orange ring – Souvenir from Tamarindo, Costa Rica.

Ever since I moved from London to the Caribbean I’ve been forced to abandon black, stud and chain covered everything and experiment with colours and new looks – and I love it. These shoes in particular (Carvela), would probably have never made it into my wardrobe back in the UK, but here they’re bold and fun and reassuringly uncomfortable. I reckon rhinestones can be my Caribbean twist on studs? That’s not to say I’ve abandoned muted colours – I love black and grey with a tan – but it just seems too happy and hot a place to always wear darks! I’ve found that colours = good mood, and sunshine = good mood, so I’m going for the double whammy. Yay summer!

Bomba shack is one of my favourite bars here in the BVI. It quite literally is a shack, but is definitely the coolest shack I’ve ever seen. It’s most famous for it’s pretty riotous full moon parties (there’s one today!). I can’t wait – maybe I’ll manage to take some pics to put up. Happy full moon!

Costa Rica

Red Crochet dress – H&M Coachella range; Sunglasses – Ray Ban Aviator; Gladiator sandals – Miami souvenir; Dark grey cotton shirt – H&M; Sunglasses – Ray Ban Wayfarer; Camera top – London (Camden market) souvenir; Boyfriend jeans – Abercrombie & Fitch; Shoes – Converse; Cut-out floral one-piece – Miss Sixty; Beige bikini – Yamamay; Multi-colour sports bikini – Oakley; Silver-frame sunglasses – Moni & Coli Puerto Rico; Brown and white wooden bangles – H&M; Artisan flower backpack – Costa Rica souvenir;  Crop top – Clover Canyon; Orange beaded wrist-band – Costa Rica souvenir; Denim shorts – Mango.

A lot of people who travel to Costa Rica head straight from the main airport at San José to greener destinations, and had we been pressed for time we would probably have done the same, but it felt strange to be in the capital and not explore it at all. I’ll be honest: San José is not the most picturesque of cities, but it’s lively and it’s here that you get the distinct sense that Costa Rica is a country growing quickly.

One-piece – Khongboon; Sunglasses – Tom Ford; Watch – Tissot

After scrolling through pages of Khongboon bikinis for what was probably hours, (seriously, every single one is so cute that I just couldn’t decide which one to buy) I ended up ordering a one-piece. While pretty from the front, the back probably has the most flattering shape of any swimsuit I’ve owned. The really long straps, criss-cross details and good quality, seamless finish make for a really unique and sexy design. Initially I was undecided between this suit with white straps and another with dark blue, but ultimately thought the white would stand out more with a tan. The best thing about Khongboon swimsuits (hand-made) is that most of them are reversible, which means that you get two swimsuits in one. Or, in the case of the bikinis, four – depending on how you style the top and bottom! I should have taken pictures of this one on the other side, which is solid white :-/ Oh well, another time! The only down side to this swimsuit is that I know have a serious case of Khongboon bikini fomo.
